More on-site disruption. Sanding produces dust even with vacuum-connected equipment. Finish products have odor during application and cure time.

How This Played Out on a Real Project

On a recent renovation in the Chateau Elan community in Braselton, Georgia, site-finished engineered hardwood was the right choice for specific project reasons — not because it is universally better.

The project involved 7-inch rift and quartersawn white oak across approximately 2,000 square feet of open-plan main level. The design goal was a lighter, more neutral result with no visible board-to-plank transitions across a large continuous floor. Bona NordicSeal was used as the sealer to keep the white oak lighter and more neutral than a standard clear sealer would produce. Bona Traffic HD was applied as the topcoat.

On a different project — a single room in an occupied home on a tight schedule, with a manufacturer’s product the homeowner had already selected — prefinished engineered hardwood would likely have been the better recommendation.

The decision depends on the project. Not on a general rule.
