Where a squeak is traced to a specific location, that location is addressed — fastened, shimmed, or otherwise stabilized — so the movement stops.

Refinishing is a different situation. On a refinish project, the existing hardwood stays in place. Sanding, staining, and finishing happen on the surface of the floor. The boards, the fasteners, the subfloor underneath — none of it is accessed.

What if a squeak is minor and the homeowner wants to leave it
Not every squeak warrants major work. Some are barely audible, occur in a single spot, and do not affect daily use.
If a homeowner is comfortable living with a minor pre-existing squeak, that is a valid choice.
